The Gateshead/Whickham School Sport Partnership (G/WSSP) is part of a national network of School Sport Partnerships which covers all maintained schools in England and links them to specialist Sports Colleges (Whickham and The Cedars). This infrastructure has provided opportunities for nearly 23 thousand pupils (5-16 year olds) to participate in at least two hours high quality PE and sport each week in our SSP. All schools in Gateshead are part of the G/WSSP . All Gateshead schools have been part of this national infrastructure since 2004. The SSP are groups of schools working together to develop PE and sport opportunities for all young people.

Our partnership consists of:

  • A Partnership Development Manager (PDM) and Assistant PDM ; the PDM & Assistant PDM are strategic managers who are responsible for developing and managing partnerships within, between and beyond schools, to ensure every child matters in physical education and sport
  • A School Sport Development Officer (SSDO); the SSDO is responsible for the strategic management of specific sports development projects and developing strong links between the SSP and key community partners.
  • A Competition Manager (CM); responsible for the modernisation of the local competition landscape by strategically developing opportunities to increase the number of young people taking part in inter and intra-school competition.
  • School Sport Coaches (SSC); the SSCs will create a step-change in the quantity and quality of coaching offered to young people in sport and make a positive contribution to the Five Hour Offer.
  • Thirteen School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCos); each SSCo is based in a secondary school (mainstream and special) and will divide their time between the secondary school and cluster primary schools to coordinate and develop school sport opportunities and community sport pathways
  • 75 primary and special school link teachers (PLTs). PLTs are based in primary and special schools and will advocate high quality physical education, coordinate and support school sport opportunities.
