Gateshead / Whickham Achievements
We are working closely with our partners and key stakeholders to continue to build on PESSCL and develop the new Strategy, together with schools, parents, volunteers, coaches, clubs. The strategy has also created wider opportunities and experiences for them:
- Talented young sports people now receive extra support for their training
- 86% of young people are participating in High Quality PE and school sport
- 15% of young people in school are actively involved in sports volunteering and leadership
- 51% of all pupils are competing in inter-school events (76% in Year 6)
- More children each year are learning to be better swimmers
- Each school is linked to an average of 9 local sports clubs in which 26% of their pupils participate
- Each school is offering an average of 20 different sports
- Young people are now supported by better trained teachers, and professional coaches
The benefits will not only be realised in the sporting arena. We know that being involved in high quality PE and sport has a number of other positive outcomes. In young people it leads to:
- Increased involvement in a healthy, active lifestyle
- Leadership skills that can be transferred to everything they do
- Increases in positive behaviour
- Increased confidence and self-esteem, leading to better attitudes to learning
- Citizenship qualities - many young people involved in sport become involved in volunteering opportunities
